Our Comfort Philosophy

We believe that no one should avoid dental care because of fear or anxiety. That's why we take a multi-layered approach to patient comfort — combining gentle techniques, modern technology, and genuine compassion to create an experience that's different from what you may have encountered in the past.

Dr. Chan takes the time to listen to your concerns, explain every step of your treatment, and check in with you throughout the process. We never rush, and you're always in control. If you need a break at any point, just raise your hand and we'll pause immediately.

For first-time patients, we begin with a relaxed consultation so you can meet our team, tour the office, and discuss any concerns before any treatment begins.

Our Comfort Options

We offer a range of comfort options so every patient can find the right fit. Your comfort plan may include one or several of these approaches:

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask and creates a calm, relaxed state within minutes. You remain fully conscious and can respond to instructions. Effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed, so you can drive yourself home.

Oral Sedation

For patients with moderate to severe anxiety, oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your appointment. You'll feel deeply relaxed and may not remember much of the procedure, while remaining conscious throughout. A driver is required.

Topical Numbing

Before any injection, we apply a topical anesthetic gel to completely numb the area first. This ensures you won't feel the needle — the most common source of dental anxiety. We use the gentlest injection techniques and the finest-gauge needles available.

Blankets & Pillows

Comfort isn't just about sedation. We provide warm blankets and supportive pillows so you can physically relax during your appointment. These simple touches make a real difference in how comfortable you feel in the dental chair.

Music & Entertainment

Bring your own headphones or use ours — listen to your favorite music, podcasts, or watch TV during treatment. Distraction is one of the most effective tools for managing dental anxiety, and we encourage you to use whatever helps you relax.

Gentle Technique

Dr. Chan's gentle approach means slow, careful movements, constant communication, and a commitment to minimizing discomfort. Combined with advanced technology that makes procedures faster and less invasive, our gentle technique is the foundation of everything we do.

Tips for a Comfortable Visit

Preparing for a Comfortable Visit

Schedule your appointment at a time when you won't feel rushed. Wear comfortable clothing, arrive a few minutes early to settle in, and avoid caffeine beforehand — it can increase feelings of anxiety. Let us know about any concerns when you check in.

Managing Dental Anxiety

Practice deep breathing before and during your appointment. Focus on slow, steady breaths to calm your nervous system. Bring headphones and a playlist you enjoy. Remember — you're always in control and can ask us to pause at any time.

Communicating with Your Dentist

Tell us about your past experiences, what makes you nervous, and what helps you feel safe. We'll adjust our approach based on your needs. Establishing a hand signal to pause treatment gives you control and reduces anxiety significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, sedation dentistry is very safe when administered by trained professionals. We monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure and use FDA-approved sedative medications. Our team has extensive training in sedation protocols and emergency management.

Will I be asleep during sedation?

With nitrous oxide, you remain awake and conscious but deeply relaxed. Oral sedation can range from light to moderate sedation where you may not remember much of the procedure. We discuss your preferences and choose the appropriate level for your comfort.

Do I need a driver after sedation?

For nitrous oxide, you can typically drive yourself home as the effects wear off within minutes. For oral sedation, you will need a driver as the effects can last several hours and impair your judgment and reaction time.

How much does sedation cost?

Sedation fees vary depending on the type and duration of sedation. Nitrous oxide is generally the most affordable option. We provide detailed cost estimates during consultation and work with insurance to maximize coverage when possible.

Can I eat or drink before sedation?

For nitrous oxide there are typically no restrictions. However, for oral sedation, we may require fasting for a specific period before your appointment. We'll provide detailed pre-appointment instructions based on the type of sedation you'll receive.

What if I have severe dental anxiety?

We specialize in helping patients with severe dental anxiety. Between sedation options, comfort amenities, and our gentle approach, we can find a combination that works for you. Many of our most anxious patients now look forward to their visits.
